PVA Management was originally established in 1978. The company’s first clients were Les Ross and Ed Doolan both of whom were then broadcasting from Birmingham – Les on BBC Radio Birmingham and Ed on the commercial station BRMB. Since then both have won many awards, Les Ross’s including a ‘Variety Club Independent Radio Personality of the Year Award’. ‘Top Breakfast Show’ at the 1986, 1990 and 1994 and 1997 Sony Awards and, also that year, an MBE for his services to broadcasting. In 2001 he received a Special Award in the NTL Commercial Radio Awards, the citation reading “… always amusing, always professional, always popular, impossible to imitate and never bettered.” In the following year, in a ceremony at Birmingham’s New Street Station, he had the honour of having Virgin Trains electric locomotive no. 86259 named after him and in 2004 was elected a member of The Radio Academy being the first local radio presenter ever to have achieved that not inconsiderable honour. His good friend, admirer and fellow academician Chris Tarrant OBE, also a PVA client of long standing, has generously said that he learnt all about breakfast radio from Les Ross and cites him as “naturally incredibly funny and the definitive voice of Birmingham”.
Ed Doolan’s distinguished broadcasting career has also been recognised with a long list of awards and honours. In 1998 he won both a coveted Sony Award and the ‘BT Regional Broadcaster of the Year’ and the following year was invested with the MBE for services to broadcasting and the community. His services to the community over some thirty years have also been recognised by no fewer than three universities; Honorary Doctorates having been awarded to him by the Universities of Birmingham, Aston and Central England – a unique distinction. In 2004, alongside his good friend and former colleague Les Ross, he too was elected a member of The Radio Academy thus according PVA the unique distinction of representing three members of the academy, all of whom are also holders of British Empire Orders.
From these solid foundations it is hardly surprising that over the past three decades PVA has been retained to advise many significant names in the world of radio, television, entertainment, literature and music.
